Speech Therapy After a Stroke
Aphasia is a language problem caused by damage to the brain, most often from a stroke. It can make it hard to find words, understand what others say, read or write. Intelligence usually isn't affected. The words are there, but getting to them is harder.
Therapy is built around what matters in your daily life, such as:
Naming people, places, and things you use every day
Getting through a phone call or a doctor's visit
Reading mail, menus, and texts
Strategies for when a word won't come, like describing it, gesturing or writing it
Why Video Works Well for Stroke Survivors
Many people can't drive for a while after a stroke, and getting to appointments is tiring. At home, a spouse or adult child can sit in, learn the strategies, and use them all week. Research supports telehealth speech therapy for many adults with aphasia. Learn more about our adult speech therapy services.
Thinking and Memory Changes
Some adults have trouble with attention, memory, or organizing their thoughts after a stroke or brain injury. These are cognitive-communication problems, and speech-language pathologists treat them with practical tools like planners, routines and phone reminders.
