School Evaluation vs. Private Evaluation in Plano
Plano families often ask whether they should go through Plano ISD or get a private speech evaluation. They answer different questions:
| School evaluation (Plano ISD) | Private evaluation (Oasis Speech) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Billed to insurance, or $250 self-pay |
| Question it answers | Does your child need special education services to benefit from school? | Does your child have a speech or language disorder, and what treatment is recommended? |
| Timing | Up to 45 school days after you sign consent, plus up to 30 calendar days for the ARD meeting | Usually about a week after you contact us, once coverage is verified |
| What happens next | The ARD committee decides eligibility and writes an IEP | You get a written report and a treatment plan, and therapy can start right away |
Many families do both. A private evaluation can get therapy started while the school process runs, and you can share the report with the school.
What a Private Speech Evaluation Includes
A parent interview about development, health and your concerns
Standardized tests for speech sounds, language or fluency, depending on the need
A conversation or play sample to hear how your child actually talks
A written report with results, a diagnosis if one applies, and recommendations
Plano School Districts and Early Intervention
Most Plano children attend Plano ISD. Some West Plano neighborhoods are zoned to Frisco ISD. To request a school evaluation, write to your child's principal and the district's special education office. Our Texas school evaluation guide has a sample letter.
For children under 3, the Collin County Early Childhood Intervention program is ECI of LifePath Systems.
