When Your Child Talks Fine but Struggles With Language
Some kids speak clearly and still have a hard time with language itself. They might:
Have trouble following directions with more than one step
Use short, simple sentences for their age, or mix up grammar
Struggle to learn and remember new words
Find it hard to tell a story or explain what happened at school
Answer a different question than the one you asked
This can be developmental language disorder (DLD). About 1 in 14 children has it, and it often goes unnoticed because the child seems to talk a lot. DLD can make reading, writing, and schoolwork harder, so it's worth checking.
How Language Therapy Helps
Sherry uses books, pictures, and your child's own schoolwork to build vocabulary, sentence skills, and storytelling. Parents get simple ways to practice during everyday routines like dinner, bedtime and the drive to school. See all our pediatric speech therapy services.
Fort Worth and Arlington School Districts
Fort Worth children attend Fort Worth ISD, Keller ISD, Northwest ISD, Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD, Crowley ISD, Birdville ISD and others. Arlington families are mostly in Arlington ISD. If you think your child needs language support at school, you can request a free evaluation in writing. Our Texas school evaluation guide shows you how.
