Medicaid, CHIP and STAR Kids Speech Therapy in Houston
In the Houston Medicaid service area, we're in network with UnitedHealthcare Community Plan for all four of its Texas programs:
STAR: Medicaid for most children and families
STAR Kids: Medicaid for children and young adults 20 and younger who have disabilities
CHIP: coverage for children in families that earn too much for Medicaid
STAR+PLUS: Medicaid for adults with disabilities and adults 65 and older
The Houston service area covers Harris, Fort Bend, Brazoria, Montgomery, Galveston, Waller, Austin, Matagorda and Wharton counties.
Houston families have several other Medicaid health plans to choose from, and we aren't in network with those plans right now. Check the name on your child's insurance card before you call. If it says UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, you're in the right place.
What Texas Medicaid Needs Before Speech Therapy Starts
Texas Medicaid requires an order from your child's doctor for speech therapy. Ask your pediatrician for a speech therapy referral, or give us the doctor's name and we'll request it. After the evaluation, we send the prior authorization to your plan for you.
Speech Therapy for Autism and Complex Needs in Houston
Many Houston children on STAR Kids have autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy or another condition that affects communication. Sherry has years of experience with complex pediatric cases, including autistic children and gestalt language processors, who learn language in whole phrases before single words.
Therapy goals are built around what your child needs at home and at school. If your child has a STAR Kids service coordinator, let them know you've chosen Oasis Speech. With your written permission, we'll share progress with your coordinator and your child's doctor. Learn more about our autism speech therapy.
Houston ISD and School Speech Therapy Services
Most Houston children attend Houston ISD, the largest school district in Texas, or Cypress-Fairbanks, Aldine, Alief, Spring Branch, Klein, Spring, Pasadena or Galena Park ISD.
Every one of these districts will do a free speech and language evaluation if you ask in writing. In Texas, the team that decides whether your child qualifies is called the ARD committee (other states call it the IEP team). Private speech therapy can run alongside school services.
Early Intervention for Toddlers Under 3 in Harris County
Texas Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) serves children from birth to 36 months. Harris County has several ECI programs, including The Harris Center, Easter Seals of Greater Houston, Bay Area Rehabilitation Center, and BACH ECI, and your ZIP code determines which one serves you. Find yours with the HHS ECI Program Search. ECI and private speech therapy can happen at the same time.
