Speech Therapy in The Woodlands, TX
Online speech and language therapy for The Woodlands, Spring, Conroe and Montgomery County families. Sherry Owais, M.A., CCC-SLP, is a Texas-licensed speech-language pathologist with a strong background in language, literacy and dyslexia.
When Reading Trouble Starts With Language
Reading sits on top of spoken language. A child who has trouble hearing the separate sounds in a word, learning new vocabulary or following a long sentence will often find reading hard as well.
Sherry works on the skills underneath reading:
Sound awareness, like rhyming, blending and breaking words into sounds
Linking sounds to letters
Vocabulary and sentence understanding
Retelling a story in order and answering questions about it
Signs worth a closer look include trouble rhyming, slow progress with letter sounds, mixing up sounds in longer words, and avoiding reading out loud. Learn more about our dyslexia and literacy support.
Texas Changed How Schools Handle Dyslexia in 2023
Since the 2023-24 school year, Texas law (House Bill 3928) treats dyslexia instruction as special education. When a school suspects dyslexia, it evaluates through the special education process, with your consent, and the ARD committee must include someone who knows reading and dyslexia. Students who got dyslexia services through a 504 plan were to be reviewed for special education by the end of the 2024-25 school year.
If your child's reading support changed recently, this law is probably why. Sherry can go through the evaluation with you and help you prepare for the ARD meeting.
Conroe, Tomball and Magnolia ISD
Depending on your address, your child attends Conroe ISD, Tomball ISD or Magnolia ISD. The village name alone doesn't tell you, so check your district by street address. That district's special education office is where a written evaluation request goes.
