Speech Therapy for Florida Children: Early Steps, Schools and Private Therapy

Florida families have more than one path to speech therapy, and many children use more than one at the same time.

Under age 3: Florida Early Steps

Early Steps is Florida's early intervention program for children from birth to 36 months with developmental delays or disabilities. If your toddler is a late talker or isn't meeting speech milestones, you can ask your pediatrician for a referral or contact your local Early Steps office directly. You don't need a diagnosis first.

Private telehealth speech therapy can work alongside Early Steps. Some families add sessions with us for more practice time, more flexible scheduling, or a second opinion.

Age 3 and up: your school district

When children turn 3, Florida school districts take over evaluations through Child Find. Parents can request a free speech and language evaluation from their district, even before kindergarten. School therapy focuses on what a child needs to succeed in the classroom.

Private telehealth therapy

Private therapy covers what schools and early intervention often can't: more frequent sessions, summer support, adult speech therapy, and goals beyond the classroom. With telehealth, sessions happen at home, with no drive across town and no waiting room.

What We Treat for Florida Children and Adults

For children: speech delay and late talking, speech sound disorders, language disorders, stuttering, autism-related communication, social communication and dyslexia and literacy.

For adults: aphasia after stroke, dysarthria, cognitive-communication, stuttering and voice disorders.

Adult telehealth is especially helpful after a stroke or brain injury, when getting to a clinic can be hard. Many Florida families also use it to support a parent or grandparent in another city.

Using Step Up For Students for Speech Therapy

Florida's Family Empowerment Scholarship for Students with Unique Abilities (FES-UA), managed by Step Up For Students, helps eligible students ages 3 to 22 pay for approved services. Qualifying conditions include speech impairment, language impairment and autism. If your child has a scholarship, contact us and we'll walk you through using it for speech therapy.
