Bumpy Speech in Preschoolers: When to Check

Many 2- to 5-year-olds repeat words or sounds as their language grows fast, and many grow out of it. It's worth an evaluation when:

  • The stuttering has gone on for more than 6 months

  • Your child stretches sounds or gets stuck with no sound coming out

  • You notice tension, like tight lips, eye blinks, or a pushing voice

  • Your child starts avoiding words or says they can't talk

  • A parent or sibling stutters

What Helps at Home

Small changes in how the family talks make a real difference for young children who stutter. Sherry coaches you through them during sessions:

  • Slow your own pace a little, rather than asking your child to slow down

  • Wait for your child to finish, even when you know the word

  • Keep a few minutes a day of one-on-one talk time with no questions or rushing

School-Age Kids, Teens and Adults

Older speakers often have years of stuttering habits, like switching words or staying quiet in class. Therapy works on easier ways to start and move through words, reducing the fear around speaking, and practicing real situations: ordering food, presenting in class, calling a doctor's office, or a job interview. Adults can read more on our adult stuttering page.
